What is your experience in Organic Farming?
This past summer I WWOOFed in California. I stayed at a little homestead called Wildforest Sanctuary. The couple, Melinda and Karl, had lived there for 9 years in the mountains of Annapolis, CA. Their garden was flourishing and they grew vegetables of all sorts. I mostly worked in the garden, watering, planting, transplanting, working with the compost piles, weeding, harvesting, etc. I also worked with their 4 goats and 2 newly born baby goats. I fed them and took care of them, as well as collecting the eggs from their ten chickens. I also worked in their fruit orchards, and worked with medicinal herbs that we grew in the herb gardens. We made herbal remedies such as tinctures, teas, hydrosols, and essential oils.
Besides the WWOOFing experience, I attended a college in Vermont for one year studying sustainable agriculture. Our college had a farm, which we grew vegetables, to supply for the dining hall at the school. Mostly the vegetables went to the CSA and farmer's market. I helped with "veggie chores", working in the early morning before class, harvesting and planting and doing bed preparation. I got experience with a variety of tools. We also had 2 milk cows and I milked them twice a week on a "milk chore slot". I have learned the importance of a relationship between farmer and plants, as well as farmer and animal. I am excited to learn and work more!
