When I was a little girl, my mother had a large garden; mostly we would grow corn, watermelon, tomatoes, green beans, and cucumbers. My memories are of my boots getting stuck in the mud, sweating under the sun while pulling weeds, and snapping green beans in preparation for canning.
When I became a young woman, I started a small garden in my backyard, and I have been doing small-scale gardening (similar to the above) for the last 2-3 years. I have also volunteered on two different local gardens for teenagers in my city. I know a little bit about preparing the soil, making compost, planting seeds, organically fertilizing, and harvesting, but my work is most successful when I read a book about it or am following the leadership of a more experienced gardener.
